Usage → Project

Monitor BigQuery project-level usage, costs, and identify saving opportunities across your entire data estate.

The Project tab provides a high-level overview of BigQuery usage across all your projects. This view helps teams understand aggregate compute consumption, storage costs, and identify optimization opportunities.

Overview

The Project usage view aggregates metrics across your BigQuery environment to show:

  • Total compute consumption (slots) and estimated costs
  • Query volume and data processing trends
  • Storage utilization and costs
  • Annual saving potential from optimization recommendations

Page Controls

Project Filter

Filter metrics to specific BigQuery projects. Select one or more projects to scope all cards and charts.

Cost Toggle

Toggle between resource metrics (slots, bytes) and cost estimates (USD).

Summary Cards

Total Slots Used / Total Slots Cost

Shows aggregate slot consumption across selected projects for the last 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.

Total Queries

Shows query volume across selected projects for each time period.

Total Bytes Processed

Shows data scanned by queries for each time period.

Total Storage

Shows storage consumption including:

  • Total data size
  • Estimated monthly storage cost
  • Count of tables that may be unused

Annual Saving Potential

Aggregates potential savings from storage and compute optimization recommendations. Click on the value to see a detailed breakdown.

Charts & Tables

Query Time Distribution

A pie chart showing the distribution of query execution times, helping you understand if your workload consists of many small queries or fewer large queries.

Overview by Project

A table showing per-project metrics including user count, query count, slots used, and bytes processed. Click on any project to see detailed query information.

Top Projects by Slots

A bar chart showing which projects consume the most compute resources.

Use Cases

Cost Attribution

  • Identify which projects consume the most resources
  • Track cost trends over time
  • Attribute costs to specific teams or business units

Capacity Planning

  • Understand peak usage patterns
  • Plan for reservation purchases
  • Identify projects that may need dedicated capacity

Optimization Prioritization

  • Quantify the value of optimization efforts
  • Prioritize which projects to optimize first
  • Track progress on cost reduction initiatives
